There was a realization
The faith that defined you, molded you
Had shifted, first imperceptibly then like a chasm opening
The things you thought you knew were lost amongst the thistles
The truths you held fast to were entangled in the briars
The skeptics call it deconstruction, a systematic destruction
Of the status quo and the stable base
The seekers call it renewal, an intentional critique
Of what has been, to be more fully who we were designed to be
Standing face to face with the questions
The harder you tried to hold on
The more your hands ached in their closed fists
Your heart bled from the disappointment you felt
As your soul drained by that which had once given life
The people you love look at you strangely
The people you trust no longer trust you
The voice you had always clung to was missing
The presence you still believed in felt distant
The guide that directed you and lead you felt absent
Without a compass or a map, you began to journey
To discover Him in the little and big things
Face to face with having to choose, to know, to believe
You had to rediscover yourself along the way, too
Chaos ensued
Your life in upheaval
You pray and you cry and you beg and you plead
Your ears strain from the desperate longing to hear
But the God you’ve come to know seems invisible
Giving up would be easy to do
Just leave the God stuff to the “religious” people
But despite the flaws and despite the anger
You still believe in that there is more to the journey
Even though the road has gone a completely foreign direction
You believe there is someone ahead of you, guiding you
Your world is dark and scary and lonely and loud
While at the same time being light and bright and quiet
And you choose, every day, to believe that God won’t always be silent.
Definitely have a writer in the family.
